Whisper
A quiet presence emerges from the fire in this microwork. Standing at approximately 5 inches, Whisper is an asymmetrical, pod-like vessel whose elegant, fluid form suggests both containment and release. Its gently swelling body tapers into a softly flared, off-center spout that catches light along its rim, while the surface—smooth yet alive with subtle undulations—bears the intimate traces of its making.
Through traditional burnishing, the white clay achieves a soft, luminous satin finish. While some texture is left to evoke the raw emotion both in the piece and the viewer. In the final horsehair firing, strands of horsehair are introduced at peak temperature, leaving delicate, calligraphic trails of carbon across the form. These dark, smoky markings—some sharp as fractures, others drifting like breath—record a fleeting moment of transformation, turning the vessel into a living document of fire and chance.
Both ancient and contemporary in spirit, Whisper embodies quiet strength and vulnerability. It invites close observation, rewarding the viewer with shifting details as light moves across its curves: a vessel that seems to listen as much as it speaks.
